Dr. Rishi Kumar is a board-certified and fellowship trained ophthalmologist and is the director of Cataract and Glaucoma Surgery at Kumar Eye. Dr. Rishi joined Kumar in 2007 and is currently the CEO of the practice.
After completing a degree in pre-medicine and dramatic literature at Columbia University in the City of New York, Dr. Rishi obtained his degree in medicine at George Washington University in Washington D.C. He then completed his internship in medicine at George Washington University Hospital. Following this, Dr. Rishi completed a research fellowship at the Indiana University Glaucoma Research and Diagnostic Center with Dr. Alon Harris. Residency in ophthalmology was then completed at the SUNY Downstate Medical Center in New York City. Dr. Rishi completed his surgical fellowship training in advanced cataract and glaucoma with the late, Dr. Alan Crandall, one of the world’s leading eye surgeons at John A. Moran Eye Center in Utah.
Dr. Rishi is a pioneer in cataract and glaucoma surgery. He was the first surgeon in Louisville in Kentucky to perform gonioscopy-assisted trans-luminal trabeculotomy in a family of kids to successfully control their congenital glaucoma. He also performed the first micropulse trans-scleral cyclophotocoagulation procedure in Kentucky. He was the first to implant the Dextenza implant with cataract surgery in Kentucky. Currently, his special interests include combined cataract and glaucoma surgery, including trabeculectomy and minimally-invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) such as the iStent W implant system and the Omni visco-canalostomy surgeries.
He has co-authored several peer-reviewed articles and books in glaucoma diagnostics and has been a mentor to medical students in glaucoma research. Dr. Rishi is a past president of the Louisville Academy of Ophthalmology and currently is on the Board of the Greater Louisville Medical Society and is the Chair of the Advocacy Committee. He also served on the Board for the Shively Area Ministry for several years.
Dr. Rishi and his wife, Sunday, enjoy spending time with their two children and english bulldog. He also enjoys playing golf, rowing, BBQ in the back yard and reading a good novel when on vacation.

Dr. Ashima Gupta joined Kumar Eye Institute in 2013 to work alongside her father and brother and offer diverse ophthalmology specialties at the practice. She continues to be a driving force in Kumar Eye Institute’s mission of high-quality eye care that puts the patient’s well-being first.
Dr. Gupta is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in pediatric ophthalmology and adult strabismus. Dr. Gupta served as Director of the Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus Service from 2006-2013 at the State University of New York at Downstate in Brooklyn, NY. With her calm and compassionate demeanor, Dr. Gupta provides exceptional eye care to a wide variety of patients, ages 0 and above. She took over her father’s practice with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020 and is enjoying taking care of his patients as well as new patients with diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration.

Dr. Gupta completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Louisville in 1995. Her passions include learning culinary medicine and preventing disease through proper nutrition. She enjoys yoga and spending time with her husband and twin daughters.

Dr. Kumar is a board-certified ophthalmologist and has performed many cataract, glaucoma, and retina eye procedures. Currently, he focuses on being a member of the board of directors for the organization. He also spends his time being a consulting physician for the practice, helping train and instruct the clinical team for the ideal patient experience.

Dr. Travis Whitlow joined Kumar Eye Institute in the summer of 2023 as a consultative optometrist. Originally from Glasgow, Kentucky, he completed his undergraduate studies at Bellarmine University, with degrees in biology and philosophy. He then received his Doctorate of Optometry from the Kentucky College of Optometry in Pikeville, Kentucky. To further his education he completed a one year residency in ocular disease at John Kenyon Eye Institute, where he was trained in managing diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, glaucoma, dry eye, primary and emergency eye care.
Dr. Whitlow was awarded the Dr Ronald McCoy Community Service Award and continues to participate in Remote Area Medical clinics- which provide free healthcare to underserved areas of eastern Kentucky and other parts of the country. He is a current member of the Kentucky Optometric Association and the American Optometric Association. His free time is often spent with his wife, son, two huskies, and 2 tail-less cats.
